In a recent interview, two industry veterans explored the transformation of sustainability practices within the chemical sector. Reflecting on changes over decades, they highlighted the industry's gradual yet impactful journey toward more sustainable solutions.

When sustainability first emerged as a topic in the 1980s, the focus was largely on performance and cost, with little regard for environmental impact. Products were heavily reliant on fossil-based materials and harmful solvents, prioritizing efficiency over ecological safety. However, as environmental concerns grew, so did the need for change. Innovations like water-based solvents and renewable materials began to reshape industry norms.

Despite progress, challenges persist. Solvent-based systems, while less eco-friendly, continue to dominate due to their superior performance. Similarly, while water treatment processes now prioritize reduced environmental harm, implementing sustainable practices at scale remains slow.

Moving forward, there is a need for balanced regulation. Striking a harmony between fostering innovation and enforcing sustainability standards is critical. Transparency, particularly around product carbon footprints, is also a pressing issue. Though companies have the data, many hesitate to publish it without industry-wide benchmarks or regulations, fearing competitive disadvantages.

With sustainability in our markets, it isn't just about renewable products. Rather, it's about reducing overall environmental impact. Long-lasting, durable products and conscious resource usage play vital roles in creating a sustainable future. With momentum building in the past decade, the hope is for accelerated progress driven by collaboration between industry leaders, regulators, and stakeholders.

As both speakers agreed, "We are the people to make sustainability happen."
