Formulation strategies to enhance weather resistance and longevity for exterior coatings
Façade coatings must withstand environmental stressors such as UV exposure, moisture, and dirt accumulation. We compared multiple formulations with varying polymer binders, pigment volume concentrations (PVC), and functional additives. Performance criteria assessed include UV resistance, dirt pick-up resistance, water vapour permeability, water repellency, and thermal insulation.
The findings demonstrate that optimised formulations can significantly improve façade durability. These results offer practical guidance for developing long-lasting façade coatings.

- UV Resistance: Right selection of functional fillers provided superior colour retention and reduced chalking under accelerated weathering.
- Dirt Pick-Up Resistance: Lightweight fillers combined with the right binder showed the best results
- Water Vapour Permeability & Water Repellence: Additive selection optimised breathability and moisture protection.
- Thermal Insulation: Lightweight fillers significantly lowered thermal conductivity while maintaining film performance.

- Binders: Pure acrylics, styrene-acrylics, and vinyl acetate-based dispersions (VAE) for UV and weather resistant coatings.
- Fillers & Extenders: Glass beads, nepheline syenite, talc, and hydrophobic fillers for opacity, crack resistance, and water repellence.
- Silicone Resins & Additives: Used to enhance moisture resistance and balance vapour permeability.
- Insulating Additives: Hollow glass microspheres and expandable microspheres for thermal insulation and weight reduction.
